Correspondence, 1777-1855 of George and Frederick Scriba regarding mercantile interests, land transfers and other business matters. Also included are invoices, orders, promissory notes, inventories, deeds maps and other papers relating to the Scriba Patent, George Scriba's 500,000 acre purchase in Oneida County. Prominent in the collection are journals and ledgers of George and Frederick Scriba's mercantile activities. Frederick did a large volume of import and export trade through his New York, N.Y. firm. Correspondents include Benjamin Wright and the other merchants who contributed to the funds needed to purchase Scriba's Patent.

Benjamin Wright (1770-1842) was a prominent land surveyor and engineer. During his career, he surveyed much of the lands along the upper Mohawk and Black River Valleys, which are now situated in Herkimer, Oneida, Lewis, and Jefferson Counties in New York State. Wright was also noted for his advocacy and development of canals and transportation infrastructure in New York State. He was chief engineer in the design and construction of the Erie Canal.
